Biography

Irina graduated from the McGill School of Architecture in 2002 with a Medal for Excellence in the Study of Architecture.  For her final thesis she explored the subject of "terrains vagues" - how can we preserve the nostalgia of these places and reintegrate them into the city without erasing traces of the past. Her study resulted in the reinterpretation of the ambiguous spaces underneath a bridge as a sequence of three performance places: one for dance, one for poetry and one for theatre. Subsequently, she acquired her professional experience in Quebec working on two major cultural projects: the Theatre of Vieux Terrebonne with atelier TAG and JLP, and the Concert Hall of Dolbeau-Mistassini with Paul Laurendeau, Architecte. She also undertook an internship with l’Étude Louis Brillant, Architecte on construction sites dealing with restoration of heritage buildings, which included, among others, the restoration of masonry, roofs and stained glass windows, for the church of Saints-Anges-Gardiens, the convent of Sisters of Sainte-Anne and the house of Mother d’Youville.

Irina continued her career in Europe joining the team of Foster + Partners in London in 2008.  During her time with the company she had a chance to work on incredibly ambitious projects, such as MIST (Masdar Institute of Science and Technology) - a university campus in the Middle East powered entirely by solar energy - and Bund Financial Center, where her responsibilities included the coordination of the design for a hotel, commercial façades, public spaces within the office towers and the Cultural Center - a building with a multi-layered moving façade, inspired by traditional Chinese open air theatres typically located in the centre of outdoor markets.  Situated between the Old Town and the international historic district, this project aimed to promote and build upon traditional craftsmanship and local knowledge. Passionate about art and history, Irina took a brief pause from architecture to participate in the documentation an archaeological site of the ancient Greek city of Helike. During the following year Irina represented Heatherwick Studio in New York on the project of transformation of the Lincoln Center Philharmonic Hall, which was managed using the integrated design process (IDP). Unfortunately this project was not carried out.

On her return to Montreal in 2017 Irina opened her own studio to share her knowledge, experience and love of architecture with clients, who want to realise their dream projet.
